How to Reach Merak, Pangong Tso

Merak is a picturesque village located on the eastern shore of Pangong Tso Lake in Ladakh, India. Known for its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere, it is a great spot for travelers seeking a quiet escape. Here’s how to get to Merak:

By Air:

The nearest airport to Merak is Leh Airport (LEH), which is about 160 km away from Pangong Tso. Leh is well-connected to major cities in India like Delhi, Mumbai, and Srinagar via regular flights.

From Leh Airport:

  • Taxi: After arriving at Leh, you can hire a taxi to reach Pangong Tso. The drive to Merak will take about 5-6 hours, passing through scenic routes and breathtaking landscapes. It’s a good idea to hire a taxi that specializes in trips to Pangong Tso as the road conditions can be challenging.
  • Shared Rides: For budget-conscious travelers, shared cabs or jeeps are available from Leh to Pangong Tso, though they are not as flexible as private taxis.

By Road:

Reaching Merak by road is an adventure in itself. The journey to Pangong Tso from Leh takes you through some of the most stunning landscapes in Ladakh.

Leh to Merak:

  • Distance: Approximately 160 km
  • Route:
    • From Leh, drive via Khardung La (one of the highest motorable passes in the world) and Chang La (another high-altitude pass) on the way to Pangong Tso.
    • The road from Leh to Pangong Tso is a mix of tarmac and dirt roads, and while the first part of the journey is relatively smooth, the last stretch toward Merak can be a bit rough, so it’s advisable to travel in a sturdy vehicle.
    • From Spangmik, you can continue your drive along the lake’s shore to reach Merak.

Alternative Route via Chushul (via Tangste):

If you want to explore a slightly offbeat route, you can drive from Leh to Tangste and then head toward Chushul before reaching Merak. This route is less traveled and offers a more secluded experience but requires a more experienced driver and a high-clearance vehicle. Permission is also required from the local authorities.

By Taxi/Private Car:

Hiring a private taxi or car from Leh is the most comfortable and convenient option for most travelers. The drive to Merak offers scenic views of barren mountains, valleys, and the shimmering Pangong Tso lake.

By Bike (Motorcycle):

If you’re an adventurous traveler, a bike trip from Leh to Pangong Tso is a popular and thrilling option. The route offers a unique experience of Ladakh’s rugged terrain. A rented bike from Leh can be a great way to explore at your own pace.

Permits:

Merak is located near the India-China border, so you will need to obtain an PROTECTED AREA PERMIT to visit this area. The permits can be easily arranged ONLINE or through a local travel agent. Make sure to carry the necessary documents (ID proof, passport-sized photographs) when applying for the permit.

Best Time to Visit:

The best time to visit Merak and Pangong Tso is during the summer months (from May to September), when the weather is more favorable. The roads are accessible, and temperatures are more manageable. The winter months can be extremely cold, and the region experiences heavy snowfall, making the roads inaccessible.

Travel Tips:

  • Altitude Sickness: Merak is at a high altitude (around 14,000 feet), so travelers should be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness. It’s recommended to acclimatize in Leh for at least 1-2 days before heading to Pangong Tso.
  • Clothing: Even in summer, the temperature can drop at night, so bring warm clothing and gear. Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hats) is also necessary due to high UV levels in the mountains.
  • Travel Insurance: Given the remote location and rough terrain, having travel insurance that covers high-altitude travel is a good idea.
  • Vehicle: Ensure your vehicle is in good condition, as the roads to Merak are often bumpy and rough.
